Do You Need a Mobile App or Just a Mobile-Friendly Website?

Many Indian businesses waste lakhs building an app they didn't need. Here's how to decide between a mobile app and a mobile-friendly website in 2026.

Every week a business owner tells us "I want an app". Often, they don't actually need one — a mobile-friendly website would serve them better for a fraction of the cost. Here's how to decide honestly.

The expensive mistake

Apps cost more to build, must be maintained for both iOS and Android, and — crucially — users have to download them. Getting someone to install your app is genuinely hard. Many businesses spend ₹5–15 lakh on an app that sits unused while a good website would have driven real results.

When you genuinely need an app

Build an app if you need:

  • Frequent, repeat usage — customers use it daily/weekly (food delivery, banking, fitness)
  • Device features — camera, GPS, offline mode, push notifications as a core part of the experience
  • Performance-critical interactions — gaming, heavy real-time features
  • A loyalty/engagement loop — where being on the home screen matters

When a mobile-friendly website is smarter

A responsive website (or Progressive Web App) is the better choice if:

  • Customers visit occasionally (most service businesses, shops, B2B)
  • Your main goal is to be found and contacted — leads, enquiries, bookings
  • You want to rank on Google — apps don't show up in search; websites do
  • You want lower cost and faster launch
  • You don't want the friction of asking users to download anything

The middle option: a Progressive Web App (PWA)

A PWA is a website that behaves like an app — it can be "added to home screen", work offline, and send notifications, without an app-store download. For many businesses it's the sweet spot: app-like experience, website cost, Google-findable.

A simple decision test

Ask: "Will my customer use this more than once a week?"

  • Yes, frequently → an app may be worth it
  • No, occasionally → a mobile-friendly website or PWA is smarter

And: "Do I need to be found on Google?" If yes, you need a website regardless — an app can't replace that.
